VILLAGE FESTIVALS IN THE VALLEY OF LECRIN

The 12 villages making up the community of the community of Lecrin each have variety of festivals, some religious and others celebrations of the changing seasons, the citrus crop, art and culture…

Below is a list of the festivals ordered by date. To help you get the most out of these events we have added our comments noting the interesting aspects of these celebrations.

JANUARY – FEBRUARY

1st January “Fiesta del Mosto”. Cónchar.
Celebration of the year’s new production of “Mosto” (young wine). Wine and “Remojón conchúo” (typical salad with orange, olives, onion and salted cod) served free to all present. Starts at 12.00am. You only have to bring your own glass.

1st – 2nd January “Virgen de los Desamparados y Santa Lucía”. Murchas.

5th – 6th January “Reyes Magos” (3 Wise Men). Nigüelas, El Valle (Restábal, Melegís and Saleres).
The Spanish children get their presents from the 3 Kings on the evening of the 5th January. The 3 Kings visit the villages with a Procession and throw sweets to the children in the streets. There are also theatre shows for kids.

17th January “San Antón”. Béznar.
Patron Saint celebration. Religious procession with music.

17th -18th January. Acequias.
Patron Saint celebration. Religious procession with music. Party both nights with live music and fireworks on the last night.

20th of January. “San Sebastian Day”. Albuñuelas.
Patron Saint celebration. Religious procession with music.

3rd of February “San Blas”. Dúrcal.
Religious processions, evening parties, games for kids, fireworks.

Carnival. Albuñuelas.
Fancy dress party in the streets. Good time for everyone to “let their hair down” with the safety of doing it behind a mask!

MARCH – APRIL

Semana Santa (Easter). The dates varies each year.

“Glory Saturday Songs” “Judas’ hanging”. Dúrcal.
“Los hornazos” (traditional meals in the countryside).

Sunday of the Resurrection. “Día de los hornazos”. Albuñuelas.
Religious celebration on the streets. The streets are decorated.

Sunday of the Resurrection. Cozvíjar.
Religious processions. Big bonfire.

1st week of April “Orange Festival”. Melegís.
Gastronomic competition at local restaurants during the week leading up to the festival. Well worth trying the variations to the otherwise static menus.
Saturday: Orange juice, Orange salads and other typical dishes free for everybody.

25th of April “San Marcos”. Nigüelas.
Country pilgrimage. Country meal in La Razuela y el Romeral (Nigüelas countryside).

MAY – JUNE

3rd May. “Día de la Cruz” (Day of the Cross).
See various villages below. Central Granada also worth a visit.

Albuñuelas. Neighbours meet to make a cross and embellish the streets (mainly with flowers and traditional ceramic pieces).

Acequias. Country lunch.

Pinos del Valle. Religious procession, evening party, street games and competitions for kids. Meal “amongst the trees” – Lunch with ham, wine and other typical food.

Dúrcal. Crosses exposition on the main neighbourhood squares.

Cónchar. Embellished tractors procession from Cónchar to Marchena.

15th May “San Isidro”. Cozvíjar.
Religious processions, evening party, street games for kids and fireworks.

15th May “San Isidro Pilgrimage”. Dúrcal.
Religious procession in the countryside with popular songs and dances.

31st May “San Segundo” Chite.
Popular party and fireworks. Free “paella” (typical Spanish rice dish) for everybody.

13th June “San Antonio de Padua”. El Valle (Restábal, Melegís and Saleres).
Religious procession, games and activities in the street, popular dances. Big popular paella at lunch time.

24th June “El Día de las Roscas”. Albuñuelas.
Celebration in the countryside.

JULY – AUGUST

Corpus (Sunday, the date varies every year). Talará.
Altars in the streets. The streets are decorated with flowers and beautiful shawls.

1st Sunday of August. “Virgen de la Cabeza”. Cozvíjar.
Processions, evening parties, kid’s games and fireworks. The following day (Monday) there is a pilgrimage and country lunch.

August celebration. Albuñuelas.
5-6 Days of multiple activities- celebrations. (Games, music, evening parties).

15th, 16th and 17th August “San Roque”. Cónchar.
Religious procession, evening party, street games for kids and a fireworks display on the last night.

15th,16th and 17th August “Patron Saint Celebration”. Pinos del Valle.
Religious procession, evening party, street games for kids, sport competitions and a fireworks display on the last night.

31st August “San Ramón” Dúrcal.
Summer celebration with 4-5 days of activities including music, street markets, fireworks…

SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER

2nd Weekend of September Patron Saint Celebration – “San Antonio Abad”. Béznar.
Parade of the brotherhood of “Mosqueteros del Santísimo”. Processions, evening celebrations and a fireworks display on the last night.

3rd Sunday of September “Virgen de las Angustias”. Nigüelas.
Processions, evening celebration with live music, sport competitions, games and competitions for kids in the street and a fireworks display on the last night.

15th September. “Virgen de las Angustias” Celebration. Albuñuelas.
Floral offering to the Virgin Mary.

1st Sunday of October. “Virgen del Rosario”. Mondújar.
Evening party, street games and fireworks.

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER

6th to 10th of December. Patron Saint celebration.
“Purísima Concepción”. Talará.
Religious processions, evening parties, street games and a fireworks display on the last night.

25th December “Rosario de las Cruces”. Murchas.
Anonymous songs performed only by the local men.

28th December “The Innocents”. Chite.
A false Major and constable are chosen to organize the celebration. They organize an auction to dance with the local girls. The collected money is used to restore the local church.
